A crude oil bottle test can be described as the procedure in which different demulsifiers are added to bottle samples of a crude oil emulsion to determine which demulsifier is the most effective at breaking, or separating, the crude oil emulsion into oil and water components.
At Croda our technical specialists are able to use bottle testing methods to help determine which demulsifier intermediates are the most suitable for specific crudes.
The method is particularly important as the composition of crude oils varies significantly between different countries, wells and even day to day. It is therefore important to ensure the separation is monitored such that the formulation can be modified when effectiveness is seen to be diminishing. Once the top performing products in a particular crude are determined, they are then analysed by various property such as Relative Solubility Number (RSN), function and cost before being formulated to produce a high quality demulsification formulation.
